Is Your Olive Oil Real or Phoney?

I use canola oil when baking a cake or making cookies. I  use olive oil for all other cooking. I like using olive oil.  Because after reading over and over how great it is, I feel like it is healthier for me and my family so therefore I use it.

You know it is hard enough to make sure we use healthy natural products in our meals.  Now I hear that I possibly have not been using real olive oil at all. That really makes me angry. Why do companies that produce our food want to slip something phoney or bad for us into our kitchens? I just do not understand this.

Over the last few years we have seen countless articles praising olive oil as the best oil for us. We hear it from the medical field that it can help  keep our cholesterol at a lower level. It can decrease our heart disease risk.  So many of us have switched from vegetable oil to olive oil.  I have always questioned which was best for our health, virgin or extra virgin olive oil. Now I have to question real or phoney.

Over 50% of the olive oils sold in the United States does not pass the test of authenticity.  What these so called “olive” oils are actually made up of are canola oil, soybean, rapseed and chemicals. Once again chemicals have been allowed in our food.  Companies that make this phoney oil are clever. They add artificial coloring to give it the color we expect to see in olive oil.

So how can we spot the real thing? Real olive oil should be a vibrant green. Most of the oil we see on our grocery shelf is a deep yellow. Be sure and read the label.  Bottles that have a  IOC label is usually authentic.  When refrigerated oil should become thicker and cloudy.  If  there is no change when refrigerated it most likely contains other oils.   When you taste it you should experience a peppery taste.

I would like to make a couple of suggestions on selecting REAL olive oil.  Check out the olive oils at the health food stores. Read the labels. Do the refrigerator test. Does your oil cloud? If not keep looking for another brand that will. Don’t get discouraged the real thing is out there.

We have to be responsible for our own food quality. It is obvious that we are not going to get much assistance in this area from suppliers or  food inspectors.  Folks when it comes to serving and eating natural, clean and healthy foods we all have to step up to the challenge and check it out.
