Give Halloween Treats without GMOs and additives

jack-o-lantern

Halloween is a fun holiday for children as well as adults. When else can a persons imagination soar so high. You can be anyone or anything you can imagine. This is one time of year you may see a dead president walking your streets, see a dog walking upright on two legs, see a monster walking around, or maybe a sweet little angel walking the earth. Even people sitting at home passing out treats and watching all the goings and comings of these creatures are having a good time. Of course as with any activity or holiday you will find a scrooge or two who hates all the activities. As adults we are responsible for making sure the little creatures have a safe and fun time. One way we can assure this happens is to pass out safe happy treats.

Candy, candy, candy! This is what most people think of when giving out Halloween treats. Candy is loaded with sugar, artificial coloring, additives and GMOs not such a healthy treat. A few years ago I taught preschool. The day before Halloween I sent home a note to parents. In this note I wrote about Halloween safety, and I ask parents to please limit children’s intake of candy. The reason for this was because of the behavior problems I would have with the children the following day. Sugar makes children so hyperactive they struggle to control their actions. I would see more crying, more aggression with other children, more restlessness and more disrespect than other days. It is not fair to your children to allow them to over indulge in candy.

Candy is loaded with artificial coloring. During the Halloween season you see orange, red, blue, black and green candies. OH MY! Unless you go out and locate a natural colored and natural flavored candy you are serving up these artificial colors. In the short term, these artificial colors cause hyperactive behavior. In the long term they cause health problems if children are allowed to eat on a regular basis.

Some candies also have GMOs in them. Human created plant, animal, bacteria, viral genes and other items not found in nature are injected into some candies being sold for Halloween use. I do not want to serve up this gross menu of candy to my little spooks and sweeties. I plan on handing out a safe non sugar, non GMO treat. Please see some of my ideas. I also have included a link with more information on unhealthy treats and more ideas for healthy treats.

Some ideas from me for a more healthy treat.

1. Get a roll of coins nickles, dimes or quarters. Drop a couple into those treat bags.

2. Erasers

3. Small birthday party treats

4. Gift certificates for a fast food restaurant

5. Gift certificate for a cookie at local grocery

6. Small books

If you must buy candy please read the labels and find a candy that is made with natural ingredients. Keep in mind companies are not required to list GMOs on food labels.

Have a safe happy Halloween and make sure your little visitors do as well.
